Great Photography Is About The Photographer, Not the Gear

A good camera can help capture what is seen, but it doesn’t create the vision. That’s the photographer’s job. It’s their eye for composition, their patience in waiting for the perfect light, their instinct to gingerly press the shutter at just the right moment - that’s what makes a great photo. In my photography, I constantly think of the phrase I learned as student of the New York Institute of Photography, “It’s not the violin, it’s the violinist.” Some of the most powerful, timeless images were shot on film cameras with no autofocus or fancy settings. Even a smartphone in the hands of a skilled photographer can produce something stunning, while the latest gear in inexperienced hands might fall flat.

So it’s not about megapixels, lenses, or editing software. It’s about storytelling, emotion, and seeing with a photographer’s eye.
