This photograph was taken on a stretch of McCarthy Road spotlighting a portion of the Copper River & Northwestern Railway "Gilahina" trestle remnants. This bridge was constructed in 8 days when the temperatures were 40 degrees below zero. The bridge contains 273 wooden trestles over 880 feet. The height of the Gilahina Trestle is 90 feet high. The cost of the total railway was $25 million.

With Alaska's rich native culture, the Klondike Gold Rush, and subsequent mining history, I’m motivated preserve that nostalgia in my photography. The Kennecott Copper Mine’s story is one such noteworthy event. For a time, it was the largest copper mine in the world. The Kennecott Mine operated from 1911 until its closure in 1938. The ore was loaded onto railcars of the Copper River & Northwestern Railway (CR&NW), for the 196 mile transport to port at Cordova. The CR&NW was one of the most ambitious engineering feats of its time, a story in itself of American industrial ambition in the wilderness. The last 44 miles of this railway traveled through the remote, rugged and challenging Wrangell-St. Elias Mountains. Parts of the railway are now McCarthy road, and remnants of trestles and bridges still stand as monuments to a forgotten marvel. Just traveling to this location is an adventure
